Don't Dig Yourself Deeper...If you are arrested or detained, assert your right to an attorney!
Police have a job to do. Their job is to catch people that break the law. It is a tough job. If you are accused of a crime, talking to the police is very likely a very bad idea. You are being suspected or accused of a crime. What most officers will look for are things to connect you to that crime. Statements do that. I advise all clients that are facing a criminal allegation to not talk to the police without an attorney present. It doesn't matter how much you think you can convince the police that you didn't do it or it wasn't you. It doesn't matter if you are telling the truth. Everything you say can and WILL be used against you. Sometimes you forget something, you say a stupid thing, you think you know something when in fact you do not. Talk to a lawyer first. Always treat the police with respect, don't be a smart ass, and just calmly ask to talk to a lawyer.
